MONT ALTO, Pa. — 宾州州立大学蒙阿尔托分校’s Race, 股本, 和 Action series spring 2021 programming will conclude on Wednesday, 4月14日, with a virtual campus discussion with New York Times bestselling author Ijeoma Oluo. 作者 "So You Want to Talk About Race" will engage in a thoughtful 和 challenging discussion of race 和 racism with our campus community.

蒙奥图的“种族”, 股本, 和 Action” series was developed by faculty member Kira Hamman, assistant teaching professor in mathematics, in 2020 as way to foster conversations about systemic racism 和 awareness on campus in the wake of the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna泰勒, George Floyd 和 many others. 的 spring program comprised a series of conversations, faculty-led seminars 和 professional development sessions.

In the spring 2021 semester, the program included seminar-style reading 和 discussion groups based on relevant books focusing on racial issues, 包括 Jesmyn Ward’s "的 Fire This Time" "Black Woman in Green" by Gloria Brown. Thanks to a grant from Barnes & 高尚的教育, a sponsor of the program, campus community members had access to free copies of each book.

“Many long-overdue conversations about racism 和 inequity have begun over the last year, both within the University 和 all around the country. 在蒙特阿尔托, we realized that we needed to create space 和 opportunity for those conversations on our own small campus as well,哈曼说. “比赛, 股本, 和 Action program was launched last summer to have those conversations 和 to begin to do the work of dismantling racism in our own community.”

的 conversation with Oluo, which will be held virtually via Zoom, will begin at 12:15 p.m. on 4月14日, 和 local community members are invited to attend. Members of the Penn State community may pre-register with a University email address to participate via Zoom. 的 public is invited to attend via webinar 和 should register to attend at this separate link.

Community members interested in reading "So You Want to Talk About Race" prior to the talk can pick up a free copy of the book from the University Library on the 蒙特中音 campus. 的 library is open to the public from 8 a.m. 到5点.m., Monday through Friday.

In addition to the support from Barnes & 高贵的, Oluo’s visit was made possible by contributions from the campus Student Activities Fee, the 蒙特中音 Honors program, 蒙特阿尔托图书馆, 和 the campus’ Occupational 的rapy Assistant program.
